What is the Doppler used for?
The Doppler is used to measure limb occlusion pressure (LOP), which is the minimal amount of pressure needed to occlude arterial blood flow, is the gold standard in the tourniquet literature. It is now the standard being used to quantify the amount of pressure in blood flow restriction therapy (BFRT) research. Personalized tourniquet pressure for each individual patient and eliminates the need to account for cuff width, limb size or blood pressure. BFRT requires the reduction of arterial inflow and the elimination of venous outflow. The pressure to stop venous outflow is lower than the pressure to stop arterial inflow. If the occlusion pressure is too high the blood supply to the exercising limb can be eliminated. If the pressure is too low then there may be to much arterial inflow and subsequent venous congestion in the limb. This can cause a painful condition for your patients. Using LOP we currently recommend a pressure of 80% occlusion for the lower extremities and 50% or the upper extremities. These are starting points and may need to be altered based on your patient’s tolerance and results.
